Camel Milk and Anesthesia: What Patients Should Know

If you regularly consume camel milk and are preparing for surgery or a medical procedure, it is important to let your healthcare team know about everything you consume—including foods, supplements, herbs, and other natural products.

Over the years, I have received questions and reports from patients and medical professionals regarding possible differences in medication response among individuals who regularly consume camel milk. These reports have raised questions about whether camel milk could potentially influence the way certain medications are processed by the body.

At this time, however, there is not enough human clinical research to establish that camel milk alters the effectiveness or clearance of anesthesia, pain medication, or opioids. Research into camel milk and its potential health effects continues to evolve, and existing studies should not be interpreted as proof of a specific interaction with anesthetic medications. Reviews of the available research have similarly noted that more rigorous human studies are needed before therapeutic conclusions can be made.

Before Surgery or a Procedure

If camel milk is part of your regular diet, tell your surgeon, anesthesiologist, dentist, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional before undergoing a procedure or starting a new medication.

Do not stop prescribed medication, change a medication dose, or alter your pre- or post-operative instructions based solely on camel milk consumption. Your medical team can determine what is appropriate based on your medications, health history, and planned procedure.

An Area That Deserves More Research

Camel milk contains a unique combination of proteins, nutrients, and bioactive components that have generated interest in several areas of health research. However, research into its potential effects on medications and drug metabolism in humans remains limited.

The questions surrounding camel milk, anesthesia, pain management, and medication metabolism are worth investigating—but they should be approached carefully and supported by clinical research.

If you regularly consume camel milk, the most important step is simple: include it when discussing your diet, supplements, and medications with your healthcare team.
